HUNTING PEOPLE: WAKE UP, BEING GAY IS STILL ILLEGAL
Being gay is still illegal in 72 countries and in 8 there is the death penalty. Since Al Sisi came to power in Egypt the harassment against the LGBTQ+ community has drastically increased and the government has banned the dissemination of a “shameful disease”.
“The recent campaigns that talk about the presence of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals as human rights are not real. Homosexuality is against humanity and religions.”
–The Egyptian Government
It all started the past 22nd of September when during the concert of the Lebanese band Mashrou´ Leila some pride flags where shown. 15 people were arrested for encouraging debauchery and being part of an illegal organisation, even though homosexuality is not expressly banned in Egyptian law. Bollocks! Guess what? That “illegal organisation” is not real, they are just people at a concert being openly proud of who they are.
The number of people under arrest has risen to 57, most of them hunted (yes, hunted, like animals) through dating apps, a normal procedure for the Egyptian cops.
Just in case you are not stunned by this situation, here comes the worst part: for those who were men, the majority of them had to pass anal examinations. The estimated number of people under arrest during the Al Sisi administration is more than 250 in his campaign of “public morality”.
Human Rights Watch and International Amnesty have already said something about this situation but it is not enough. Where are the journalists and the news reporters when they are needed?
Yes, this is real, they are killing us, they are arresting us. We still need to fight for our rights and for our life. This is why we still need Pride, we need to raise our voices for those who don’t have one anymore.
