WOMEN IN SAUDI ARABIA CAN DRIVE - FUCKING FINALLY
King Salman of Saudi Arabia has decreed that from June 2018 both men AND women will be allowed to drive, a revolutionary move that has women across the country celebrating. Once a powerful symbol of oppression, could this new freedom allow for further developments for Saudi women?
Having the freedom to drive empowers Saudi women in many ways, primarily in that many women who were employed spent half their salaries on taxis and private drivers which discouraged seeking employment in the first place. It also represents a valuable sense of independence, the simple knowledge of knowing where you are going and having the power to decide when you want to leave at your own discretion.
So what’s next? The Saudi women activists that are celebrating this new liberty have their eye on the next goal, the guardianship laws which give Saudi men undue power over their female relatives.
